cats vs. dogs

i've been a self proclaimed cat person my whole life and although I've grown up with a ton of pets (dogs, cats, birds etc) I have recently entered dog ownership.

dogs are like people only incredibly single minded. they require companionship and love, exercise, food and entertainment. they are jealous, occasionally destructive and needy. they become a part of the family, which may be due to the amount of room they take up...and how frequently they're in your face.

cats are like people too, only they are waaay more vindictive. they also require love and food but could give a shit about human companionship (unless you only have 1) and entertainment is mostly a perk. they're happy to sleep all day and dine on the hour.  but, here's where they get you.

while a dog will literally walk on your heels until you shout in frustration, a cat will stack the affection deck in their favor by admiring you from a far. looking all picturesque the human will smile when they see kitty laying on the bed spread and look at doggie and ask "won't you just lay down for a while?". you may be wondering why i think this is so sneaky on the cat's part. well, just when you've decided to claim you 'cat person' title after cleaning up a chewed shoe or broken glass, knocked off the table by doggie's tail, you find a pile of shit on the floor directly outside the clean litter box or a pile of vomit just barely touching your laptop bag. if that water isn't fresh or the bottom of the food bowl can be seen through the last few food morsels kitty strikes back, whereas doggie's messes are just because he wants to play or can't wait to see you home from work.

as my sister pointed out just yesterday, having a dog is a little like being broken into everyday. you come home to see what kind of damage has been done and hope it's nothing too valuable. but having a cat is like having Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as a permanent house guest. dog's accept their punishment and attempt to correct their behavior, if for no other reason than to make sure they get that extra pat on the head, but a cat doesn't care about discipline and makes the choice to continue down the path of naughtiness.

i don't know, i guess all animals are pretty cool. but at the end of the day i still look for my kitty to snuggle me in bed...while i await doggie's dawn wake up call to go outside and pee.

Tradition vs. everyone's bullshit

okay bloggers, today i'm wondering what the hell is wrong with the people today. Is there something so wrong with having manners, being polite and indulging the in-laws?? I mean people have only been doing it since THE BEGINNING OF TIME. If we start turning our noses up at the seemingly insignificant formalities and traditions of human kind what the fuck is our future going to hold? The written letter has already all but died...what happens if people decide that marriage is just too ridiculous a tradition to uphold? Or having manners at a restaurant? Or being polite in the face of a mildly rude acquaintance? When in the midst of a particular moment,  things of this nature don't seem very important and they probably don't even cross the minds of most people. But strangely there are people out there, who are much to old too be getting by on naivety, who regularly disregard the basics of etiquette. (wow i can't believe i just spelled that right on the first try, lol)

I just don't get people sometimes. How can someone solicit generosity while simultaneously being discriminatory? I'm sure there are a few instances where this is acceptable but when it comes to traditional behaviors that are meant to be festive or celebratory it just doesn't seem fair. I guess the thing that bugs me the most about this topic is that I feel guilty when I indulge my acknowledgement of it. I feel like a gossip when I  need to vent about an individual that I come across who behaves this way. I feel like taking the 'high road' is a form of punishment if it means that I have to repress the feelings I have about people who act shitty to others. Or maybe it's the conclusion jumping that is really the problem and not the disinterest in tradition. No patience, perhaps...

If someone doesn't give you the response that you're looking for in your self imposed amount of time, should you follow up with them or immediately assume some kind of wrong doing? Obviously, you should  assume that the "neglectful" party is out slandering you across town. For christ's sake, it's like dealing with children!

aahhh mother's day

happy mother's day!  although I made my own breakfast this morning and am solo babysitter for my niece (my sister is unresponsive) it's been a great day so far. I did a bunch of chores yesterday, lots of laundry and sweeping. I had my dinner paid for by my sweet man (who gave Julia money to pay with in his absence) and watched a chick flick in bed while the cousin's had a late night sleep over. All the toiling yesterday makes me feel productive and totally capable of sitting around doing nothing. I have a few things I want to accomplish today, like showering, but these small tasks feel like just that instead of item 20 and 21 on a long list of shit I have to do.

I already spoke to my mother today and told her about my plan to move back to the east coast in the next year. We spoke about broader topics related to this idea but no marring logistics or details. We spoke for only about 30 -45 minutes. I remember all the time we spent together while I was in high school. We'd drink coffee and eat bagels on the back porch on the weekends and plan backyard gardens. Sometimes things get so complicated when you're older. Everything is so much more serious.

My daughter is wonderful. She crawled into bed with me early early this morning and slept in until 10. I was presented with a small milk carton flower pot and a tiny seedling of a marigold that Julia has been tending to at school for weeks. Its wonderful! She read to me some sentences she wrote in school about me...things I'm good at are sewing and drawing. She likes when I snuggle her and she thinks I have a pretty smile. I love her so much more than I ever imagined you could love something. There is no way to explain this feeling as there is nothing you can compare it to. She is everything to me. Love love love her!!

So here I am sitting in bed drinking coffee in a quiet cool house with julia's mothers day card, her security toys and the sweetest softest fat momma cat. The house is quiet and cool and the only thing that would make it better would be having Tim resting by my side. I love our house and our life together and I hope to be a new mother again someday.

not much

going on. had a shitty day at work. time to put the ol' head down and be as thorough as possible. the day went fast though. i have a few fun things to look forward to this week. a box seat for an orchestra..or is it a symphony, possible dancing with the girls and mother's day. i do have to cancel a design session with my dad, which is bumming me out a little and there's nothing really going on for mother's day BUT i'm trying to find fun things in my future instead of feeling completely depressed about my shitty job. oh, and i think there's Geek Who Drink trivia on thursday but i am currently thinking about bailing on that.

I just posted easter pictures on my facebook today and i think they're adorable. i put them in the same folder as last year's pictures and, wow, what a difference a year makes. Julia looks so much older! A friend pointed out the exchange of one pregnant friend for another in the past year as well. It makes me NOT want to have anymore kids. The attention that everyone gives you is so unappealing to me right now. Normally it's not something I have trouble with, but lately I'm having such an aversion to the whole idea. I guess I'm getting older! not sure if that's a good thing or not but i'm gonna go with it right now.
